Dr. Pauline Merrill was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. She attended Princeton University, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BA in Biology. She earned her medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis, MO and completed her ophthalmology residency at Duke University Eye Center. She went on to complete a retina fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
Dr. Merrill moved to Chicago to join Illinois Retina Associates and the faculty at Rush University Medical Center, specializing in retina as well as uveitis, or inflammation in the eye. She has been principal investigator in numerous multicenter clinical trials; she has presented the results at national and international meetings and has published in leading ophthalmic journals. She has served as a member of the Ethics Committee of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a board member of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company, and a founding board member of Women in Retina. Dr. Merrill has received the Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award, and the American Society of Retina Specialists Senior Honor Award.
After enjoying life in Chicago for over 2 decades, Dr. Merrill and her husband, Chris Foster, decided to pursue their dream of living in the Carolinas. They enjoy hiking, bicycling, golf, pickleball, boating, and travelling. They are excited to explore Greenville and enjoy all the Upstate has to offer.
